Surprise Conclusion: When the Generic Makes Sense
Granted, I've been tough on the generic. But there are scenarios where it works better:
- Small residential systems (5-10kW): Efficiency gaps matter less. A 2% difference on 5kW is just 100W. Not worth the Huawei premium if budget is tight.
- When you already have non-Huawei batteries: If your site has aging LIFEPO4 batteries from a different brand, the generic might actually be more compatible. Huawei's list of compatible batteries is solid, but it's not universal.
- Projects where monitoring isn't critical: For a remote cabin that's visited monthly, total production numbers might suffice. For a corporate site with stringent efficiency targets—like ours—it wasn't enough.
For us, the Huawei Sun2000 hybrid inverter was the right call. The 98.6% efficiency, the FusionSolar app, the warranty—it saved money long-term. But I wouldn't judge anyone who picked the generic for a different context.
